Yoshikazu Tani

Tani & Abe, Senior Partner, Patent Attorney


Mr. Tani graduated the University of Tokyo (electronics) in 1965 and entered Toshiba where he worked as an R&D engineer. Mr. Tani was qualified as a patent attorney in 1973 and is specialized primarily in electronic patent cases including prosecution, litigation, opinion work, licensing and counseling. Mr. Tani worked in a patent law firm in Washington, D.C. in 1975-1977. Thereafter, Mr. Tani founded his firm in Tokyo in 1977, now, Tani & Abe having 40 patent attorneys and 130 people in total.


Mr. Tani is active in JPAA-ACPAA, JPAA-KPAA and JPAA-AIPLA joint meetings, AIPPI, APAA and FICPI.

Mr.Tani is an author of many articles relating to software protection and patent fundamentals and is a frequent lecturer both in Japan, the U.S.A., and Asian countries.


Mr. Tani is one of the founders of the Japan IP Arbitration Center.

Mr. Tani was a Council Board member of METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) and was appointed for Expert Commission by the Supreme Court in Japan.


Mr. Tani was President of JPAA (Japan Patent Attorneys Association) in 2006.


Mr. Tani is President of FICPI Japan in 2010 and 2011.
